I LOVE lifestyle sessions at home. There’s just something really beautiful about being with your family in the place that means the most to you. Being able to photograph families on their sofas,in their kitchens or bedrooms, nurseries and backyards is so special. Everyone is relaxed and comfortable and they quickly become images that you’ll treasure forever. Today, I’m sharing a few easy tips for in-home lifestyle sessions so you can enjoy them and love your images!
Nothing makes everyone smile more than dancing around together! Put on your favorite playlist – we can listen to it the whole session if you want. Seriously, nothing makes those little ones giggle like their favorite song. Have everyone pick out a few songs to put on the list and you’re almost guaranteed to have a good time!
Some of my favorite portraits of families are the ones of them reading together. Not only is it a great interactive activity for everyone to do together, it’s a chance to slow down and capture those snuggly moments we love as parents. I mean, is there anything more cozy than reading with your kids? Whether you pile on the couch or by the baby’s crib, pick out some of your kid’s favorite titles at this age and let’s read. PS. Grab the book they’re reading here by Cyana Riley!
You know the best part about being at home? Your fridge and pantry are RIGHT there. Literally right behind us. So if your kids are getting fussy, let’s take a snack break. I’m all about capturing what real life looks like – Goldfish on the floor or ice cream on the back porch and all. There’s something meaningful about being honest with where your family is right now. Lean into it and make those favorite snack foods!
With the holidays coming, one of my favorite ideas for lifestyle sessions is to have the family bake something together. Make your holiday cookies and decorate them during our session. Or what about a pizza night? Take something you usually do together as family in the kitchen and let it be the base of our session together. Everyone will have something to do and it’s just plain fun to capture those moments.
If you’re booking a lifestyle session at home, then something tells me you just want to be yourselves in your family photos. So do that! I want to know what makes your family who you are when I’m not there. Let your kids play. Make those (un)healthy snacks we all love. Whatever it is that makes you YOU, let’s capture it. That’s the best part of lifestyle sessions. There’s no pretending. Just real love to be documented.
I hope these five ideas helped you realize that lifestyle sessions can be a lot of fun – and way more than just posing together on the couch. Think about what makes this stage of life and your family unique and let’s document it! Ready to book your lifestyle session? Let’s chat! I want to get to know you and your family’s story so we can plan your dream session!

[…] Dad is working from home so we were able to do photos with him at the beginning of the session. It was a great way to start everything off and I loved watching him with his girls. Mom borrowed a dress from my client closet for herself and for her older daughter. They both looked amazing with all of the neutral backdrops we found within the house.
