Maternity portraits are such a special type of session for me to photograph. Parents are excited, overjoyed, and sometimes even anxious about their little one’s arrival – all of which is totally normal! I have the incredible job of documenting those last few weeks of pregnancy during their maternity session. I love being able to chat with my families, discuss parenthood, and preserve those final moments in time for them. It’s truly an amazing experience. With that in mind, I want all of my parents and families to feel prepared and excited for their maternity session, so today, I’m sharing a few tips to help you prepare for your maternity portraits!
I recommend booking your session at the beginning of your second trimester so that you aren’t rushing to find a photographer when it’s time for your portraits. Plan to have your sesion around 30 weeks, which is the start of your third trimester. Wondering more about when to book? Read some tips here!
Maternity sessions are special. Take the time to make yourself feel pampered and loved before our session. I recommend booking a professional hair and makeup artist (let me know if you need recommendations!). You may also want to consider a manicure and pedicure – during pregnancy, I was always looking for reasons for a leg massage!! So, mama, I’m giving you one now. If you feel your best, the confidence will come across in your portraits.
One of the reasons I offer my client closet is so that finding the perfect outfit for your session is stress-free. I offer a variety of options, colors, and sizes so you can find a dress that makes you feel beautiful! All of these dresses photograph beautifully and bring a timeless look to your portraits. You want to choose a gown you love, with a nice flow to it for your portraits.
Whether you have a certain vision for your session or you have restrictions from your pregnancy (like Gestational Diabetes), let us know. We want to help create a session that’s meaningful and beautiful – but also safe and comfortable for you. If you feel “off” the day of your session, please let us know. We want you to feel healthy when we’re working – your safety matters to us!!
Make sure before your session that you’re well hydrated and full. Pick a meal that makes you feel good, but full. Hungry moms (like kids) aren’t happy moms. Again, we want you to feel comfortable and beautiful – not starving and like you’ll fall over. Hydration is also key for beautiful skin and feeling your best!
Feel free to bring your sonogram or other sentimental items for your session. Let your photographer know what you’re thinking and we’ll be happy to include them. I always recommend that you bring items that mean something to you or your family and are simple. These should enhance your photos, not take away from them. But, there’s definitely something special about photographing you holding that sonogram!!
When we finish up, trust me – you’re going to be ready to change into something more comfortable. Bring a change of shoes and something you like to wear. Don’t forget that you may also need to pack a sweater, wrap, or jacket if it’s cooler out during your session. Layering, when done right, can look super cute and work well in outdoor photos – so don’t be afraid to come prepared!
There you have it! These 7 tips will help you feel more prepared for your maternity portraits. Most importantly, don’t stress. Your maternity photographer is here to help you and make sure you feel safe, beautiful, and loved during this special time in your life!
