This blog post is near and dear to my heart, so forgive me in advance if I’m a little emotional. Today, November 17th, is World Prematurity Day. As a parent who lived with her daughter in the NICU for a week, I’m always thankful for the incredible doctors and nurses who take care of our babies during the hardest days of their lives. When I started my business, I made the decision to offer complimentary NICU newborn portraits for families who lived in similar stories as I did. Today, on World Prematurity Day, I want to share one of these stories (and my own). I hope that if this story rings true to you, you realize you are not alone and you are so loved.
When I was 36 weeks pregnant with my daughter, she decided to enter the world. Upon delivery, she fractured her skull and spent 6 days in the NICU. Six days is nothing compared to families who spend months there when their babies are born. But, it was still hard for us. I wanted my daughter home with me. Of course, deep down, I knew it was the best place for her. As her doctor once said to me: “We love her, but we don’t trust her.” So we waited. Thankfully, the hospital had a room setup for one family to stay in so that they could be close by instead of going to an empty home. I am still so grateful we had that option. I will never forget the beeps and white noise around me as I looked at my daughter. And I’ll certainly never forget all of the cords, the handwashing, and incredible nurses who took care of my baby every day for a week. They’re the real super heroes.
Our NICU stay inspired me to offer complimentary NICU newborn sessions for families in the same boat. However, with COVID, that experience has been put on hold. I can’t wait to get back to it and capture these moments for other families. It has always been a huge honor to me to document these stories.
Today, I’m sharing a peek into another family’s story. This darling girl spent a month in the NICU and graduated just a few days after our session together. She is definitely a superhero preemie! I loved getting to document her and her family. Her parents were just oozing with love for their new baby girl. Not to mention their gratitude. They absolutely deserved a chance to capture their story and I’m so happy I had the chance to meet and work with these three.
Christina did an amazing job with our family photos. From the first time we spoke--she was incredibly thoughtful, organized and detail oriented to ensure the session would be a success.. – Katie A.
