I’m just going to say it: family photos aren’t everyone’s cup of tea (and that’s okay!). As a family photographer and mom myself, I know that getting everyone on board for your family photos isn’t always easy. However, I’m also the first to tell you that once the session happens, it’s so worth all of the convincing and conversations we have to have to make them possible. Seriously, I get it. I live with someone who would rather spend time at a brewery with our kids running around a field than get dressed up, hit the road, hear me stress out, and manage the kiddos during a photo session. But, even after many vocals “Do we have to??” and “I don’t want to do this.” and every excuse under the sun, he still manages to walk away from every photo session saying “that was fun” and gets super excited to see the images. So, no matter what the reason is that they (or you) are avoiding photos, there’s a few ways to convince your family to take professional photos.
Talking with your family and letting them know that these family photos are important to you matters. Get specific about the images you’re excited about and why you’re looking forward to them like: “I want to be in the photo where so and so lays their hand on me. That moment is so special to me.”
One of the reasons people don’t want to do photo sessions is because they don’t know the photographer. I can understand that – it’s hard to feel like yourself and want to do something when you’re worried about a stranger being in your face with a camera. It’s important to tell your family that the photographer has experience and is in control. Things might be chaotic – but that’s okay. We photographers expect that… kids are kids! Not just that, but we WANT you to have fun. No photographer goes into a session thinking it will be stressful and unenjoyable for the family.
Lifestyle photography sessions often focus on documenting your family during an experience. Consider doing something you love together – like baking, going apple picking, or your favorite friday night traditions – and having it photographed. This will help everyone feel more comfortable and relaxed. No more worrying about posing perfectly!
That’s what did the trick for me! By budgeting and asking for photos for my birthday, I was able to make sure everyone was on board. This is a great way to plan ahead – and keeps you from getting the stuff you don’t want! If you aren’t sure when to book, just ask your photographer for a gift certificate instead to wrap up and present (and then finish scheduling your session, of course!).
Family photos can be stressful… but they don’t have to be. Find what resonates with your loved ones (or yourself) and really hone in on that. With a little convincing, your family will come to understand the importance of your family portraits each year!
