One of the things that’s most important to me as a family photographer is capturing photos of your family that actually feel like YOU. There’s certainly a place for the photo of everyone smiling at the camera for your holiday card. But the photos that you’re going to display in your home are the ones that feel most like you, that feel genuine and authentic. However, I know that many families worry about just how to get those authentic images during their family photos. So, today, I’m sharing my top tips to get your best authentic photos during your session!
The key to capturing authentic photos is being comfortable… and where are you more comfortable than in your home? Being at home can help you feel less stressed and more relaxed. Not only that, but there’s something truly special about creating images that are in the place that you love most. While I love adventuring with my families, the photos at home always feel so cozy and relaxed. The vibe is just different – and it shows in your final images.
Another great way to keep your images less posed and more authentic is by giving your family something to do. Choose an activity that’s true to your family. Think about what you love doing together when I’m not there… and that’s what we’ll do! I’ve photographed families making pizza, making cookies, reading, boating, fishing, and having dance parties. By having something to do, it helps everyone feel a bit better about a camera in their face! Plus, you’ll always have gorgeous images to remember the fun moments you had as a family.
The hardest part about capturing authentic photos is that everyone is “trained” to smile and look at the camera. So, encourage your family to avoid looking at me unless instructed to. Talk with your partner and your full crew – let them know that we’ll get those traditional photos out of the way and then move into the more authentic and honest photos after that. I want to really focus on images that tell the story of your family’s love for one another. That’s what authentic photos are all about!
I love helping families create beautiful and timeless photos that will stand the test of time. Authentic and genuine images are about documenting your family’s story – in a way that feels familiar and like you. I want you to see your images and know that your story is documented forever!
