Based in Howard County, Maryland, Christina Tundo Photography serves all the definitions of family within the DMV area, preserving the authentic moments, both big and small, that you want to hold onto forever.
In-home family photos are probably my favorite way to document my CTP families. The images and moments we capture just feel so authentic and true to who you are. Getting ready for family photos – whether they’re at your home or on location – does require a little bit of prep work. As your Maryland family photographer, I’m here for you throughout the entire process so by the time your session arrives, you’re excited and ready to be photographed! That’s why today, I’m sharing 5 ways you can prepare for your in-home family photos. You might be surprised to see how simple these 5 tips actually are!
Think about what you would want to remember about your family members at this age 10-15 years from now. Maybe your family makes pizzas every Friday, or storytime is the biggest deal in your house. Whatever it is, I want to document it! Those little moments will be more meaningful to you than anything else – and truly special for your family. Plus, when your family becomes focused on whatever it is you chose to do, you’ll find our images become way more relaxed and authentic!
When I arrive, I’ll be checking out the spaces in your home that have the best natural light. But, since you live there – you probably already have a good idea of where those spaces are. Grab a laundry basket and walk around the room, picking up any clutter. This might be loose toys, books, or electronics like your Alexa or Google Home. Then, when the session is over, everything is all together to be put back away!
During our session, we will be relying on the natural light that your room has. That means we need it all coming in – so open up those blinds, push the curtains off the windows, and turn off any lights. This will make it easier to start our session together.
What do I mean by that? When choosing outfits for your in-home family photos, choose styles that reflect who you are. The color of your outfits is also going to be important. Look around your home, particularly where you hope to hang or display your artwork. What colors would fit well in that space? Generally most families are dressed casually and more comfortably for in-home sessions, which is fine by me! I would still aim for something classic and timeless- and don’t forget to take your socks and shoes off, too!
If you want a little pop of color or something fresh, consider adding a vase of fresh flowers or plants to add some dimension to the space. These simple touches can go a long way in your final photos – and they don’t take away from your family’s interactions, either!
Finally, trust in your photographer. You’ve chosen me to capture your family’s special moments for a reason, so believe in my vision and direction. Let go of any worries and enjoy the experience knowing that you’re in good hands. I promise that we’ll have fun and a stress-free session together if you follow these tips to prepare for your in-home family photos!
