Deciding to book family photos is an exciting moment! You’re ready to document the special memories of this season of your life as a family. Once you know you’re ready to book, it’s time to find a photographer that meets your needs. But, if you’re not sure where to start to find the perfect family photographer, the process can feel overwhelming. So, today I’m sharing my top tips to find a Maryland and DC family photographer who will help you create beautiful photos that you’ll cherish for a lifetime!
A photographer’s portfolio will give you a sense of their skills, creativity, and the types of moments they tend to capture. Pay attention to how they handle different lighting conditions and environments, and ensure their previous work aligns with your vision. Look for a style that resonates with you- whether it is traditional, lifestyle, documentary, or a mix. There’s no right or wrong here – you simply want to find a photographer whose work you love. Remember, your images will look similar and will be on display in your home. What kind of vibe are you looking for?
Does this photographer work with young children? Do they work with all kinds of children or just newborns? Think about your family’s dynamic and ensure that the photographer you’re looking at actually captures those kinds of sessions! I also recommend looking into the kind of support they’ll provide leading up to your session. Will they help you style outfits, find a location, or similar help?
The best way to understand how any business operates is to read how the experience went for other people. Reading Google reviews (or website testimonials) is a great chance to see what other people felt after working with a photographer. You can check out mine here!
Understanding a photographer’s pricing structure and experience is crucial to avoid any surprises later on. Does the photographer charge a session fee? Do you have rights to digital images? Is there artwork or albums included? While it is important to find a photographer within your budget, remember that quality work is an investment in preserving your family’s narrative. Know what you’re comfortable spending, but realize that good quality photos and artwork is a worthwhile investment.
Having the time to connect on the phone will help you get a feel for a photographer’s personality and approach. Some photographers require this, and others don’t. But, if you feel like it’s something that would be beneficial to you, make sure to ask!
Getting referrals from friends or Facebook groups are great. Just be sure to be specific so that people can give clear recommendations. Avoid asking for someone who “won’t cost an arm and a leg”, as price points really vary for everyone. Instead, be as specific as you can with style and your budget. For example, a not-so-good post might say “ISO newborn photographer” but a truly great one will say “ISO newborn photographer that specializes in in-home lifestyle photography. Budget is a between xy-xyz.” This will truly make a difference in the referrals you get!
Finding a family photographer that’s a good fit for you and your family is about not only finding someone with a personality that you like, but one that fits your style and vision for the session. Look for someone to invest in that will be a life long investment of your family’s love.
