Spring family portrait season is upon us! As sessions get booked, one of the most important questions to ask is WHERE you plan to have your family photos! Northern Virginia, in particular, is full of so many beautiful options – you can’t go wrong with any of them – and most importantly, there’s something for everyone and every style. I’m sharing six of the best locations in NOVA for family photos today. If you see one you love, let me know so we can plan your next photo session together!
Historic downtown Alexandria is one of my favorite places to photograph families. There’s so much beautiful architecture everywhere you look – which means lots of textures and backgrounds in your photos. I love all of the colors of the homes and the cobblestone roads. They’re so fun to explore!
If the water is more your vibe, consider Alexandria’s waterfront! You can capture some of the beautiful architecture with the water on your other side – it’s a win-win. I personally love the Alexandria waterfront at sunset. Everything gets such a stunning glow and it’s a great backdrop for the whole family.
Located in Leesburg, Virginia, Rust Nature Sanctuary is a beautiful option for nature lovers! It does require a permit, but with a little careful planning, we can certainly accommodate that. This 68 acre property contains a historic center and gorgeous gardens that are wonderful backdrops year round for family photos. Properties like this always offer a great variety of locations that are ideal for family photos, which I appreciate.
Again with the waterfront in Alexandria… I happen to LOVE working at at Jones Point Park & Lighthouse along the Potomac River. It’s actually one of the last riverine lighthouses and the only one still standing in the Chesapeake Bay, so it’s a pretty special location. Jones Point Park isn’t far from downtown, so it’s a great add-on or primarily location for your family’s photos. It’s got beautiful views and is definitely worth the trip!
Another gorgeous location in Alexandria, VA is Green Spring Gardens. These gardens do require a photography permit, but again, as long as we plan ahead – it won’t be an issue! Green Spring Gardens has beautiful open spaces and lots of stunning florals in the springtime, which makes it a gorgeous option for your family’s next photo session!
Okay, to be fair this isn’t a public location… but I always believe that one of the best options for family photos, no matter the city, is your home! I LOVE lifestyle sessions. They’re so relaxed and a great chance to capture your family – as you are – on a normal day at home. If a lifestyle session feels right for your family, then I’m absolutely here for it!
There’s a few spots in NOVA that I haven’t photographed sessions at yet… but really want to. If your family is interested in any of these beautiful options, please let me know!
Remember, these locations are not the only places I do photo sessions. They’re merely some suggestions to help you narrow down your list – or start one if you’re not sure how to do so. Finding a location that’s perfect for your family isn’t complicated. It’s about knowing your family’s style, what kind of look you want in your images, and choosing a location that can deliver both. When you inquire, we’ll work together to create your dream portraits – from start to finish – together.
