Why Do We Need Photography Permits? | DC, Maryland, Virginia Family Photography
In the DMV, many locations that my clients and I both love require photography permits. While planning a session, it can feel annoying or overwhelming to think about “one more thing” to organize before your session, photography permits really do matter. These locations use them for a variety of reasons. From maintaining the location, supporting the organization, and helping the organizer plan their calendar, they serve a multitude of purposes. Organizations deserve respect in letting us use their space, so I never have any issue taking care of getting a permit. But, I thought it would be useful to talk more about photography permits and how we include them in planning your portrait session in the DMV!
What do photography permits include?
Each organization and location has their own parameters for their photography permits. Most include permits in time increments on a specific date. Some include a year round permit. There are organizations that include exclusive use, which means during that time block you are the only clients there on site. It really depends on the site and what they’re trying to do for you! How much are permits?
Permits can range from $0 to $300 depending on the organization and the exclusivity. Some organizations require a form and a verbal permission for your session there.
What is the process for gaining a photography permit?
Great news for you! I handle it all! I will contact the organization to find out our options prior to your portrait session. Organizations require a form to be signed to abide by their expectations and I’ll share that with you, too. If there is a charge, I will update your invoice to reflect the price and we’re ready to go! If you’re struggling with the extra cost, consider it a donation to whatever location we’ve picked for your portraits!
Do we really have to get the permit?
The short answer is yes. You do. These permits show these incredible locations that we respect them, the history or work that organization is doing, and that we’re going to be aware of what we’re doing onsite. It’s important to follow all of the rules and regulations they provide, too. I want to let you know that if there’s a location I visit throughout the year, I’ve already built their photography permit cost into my business expenses, like Howard County Conservancy. I really do try to make it easy for my clients to capture the portraits they’re dreaming of!!
Photography permits are just one more part of the planning process for your dream session. They’re not meant to deter you at all!
