As a mom and a family photographer, I know that choosing the type of session that’s best for your family can feel overwhelming. There’s minis and full sessions. Studio, lifestyle, outdoor, indoor… there’s so many options and I know how easy it is to feel as though you’re not sure what to pick. One of the first decisions you need to make is how long you want your photography session to be. That will help you decide if you need to look for mini sessions or book a full family photo session. Minis are great for lots of reasons – especially with younger kids or if you just want a specific holiday or location. But, there’s moments where I’d recommend a longer photo session for your family – and that’s what we’re going to talk about today!
I’m a huge advocate of doing what is best for YOUR family – not for anyone else. There’s lots of moments when a mini session is a great option (read them here). But, if you’re booking a newborn session, or want family photos that document your time together on an adventure or in your home, a full photo session is going to be a better option for you. Wondering why? Let’s break it down:
Newborn sessions are built around your baby and your family. I want to follow their lead. That means we want to leave plenty of time for feedings, diaper changes, and even spit up accidents. Anything like that would cause a shorter session to feel rushed. Additionally, if your baby has big siblings, it’s important to have time for everyone to feel seen and heard. A full session gives us plenty of time to explore your new family’s relationships without anyone feeling rushed or pressed for time. Plus, my newborn sessions are done at home – so there’s really no reason not to relax and take your time!
Even if you book your family session at home, little ones still need time to adjust to me. It’s a lot to have some random lady come into your home and stick a big camera in their faces! While I do plenty to help build a connection with your kiddos, it’s still going to take time for them to feel comfortable. There’s no reason to rush with documenting your true and unique selves – and that requires a little time to warm up into each other.
I LOVE capturing families doing what they do best: exploring. If we’re planning a family adventure that will be captured documentary style, we’re going to want time to do it. Rushing through a fun activity will leave everyone feeling frazzled and underwhelmed. If you want to explore, let’s explore! Documentary family adventures are about being together – and that requires more than 15 minutes of our time.
I never want a family to look back on their photos and feel as if their unique selves aren’t being captured. That’s why I offer a full length photo session: from 90 minutes to 2.5 hours long. Having time to relax into our photos will make everyone feel more comfortable, more relaxed, and more ready to enjoy and be a part of the session!
