I love it when my families and clients bring their fur babies to their family portrait sessions with me. I think it’s so much fun to capture them because they truly are part of your family. I know that while it’s fun to bring them, it can also feel a bit stressful because not all fur babies are the most predictable. So today, I wanted to share 5 tips for fur babies during family sessions. I hope these help you feel more excited about bring your furry family member to our portrait session!
The thing about bringing animals to portraits is that I don’t know them as well as I might know humans. So, while we’re planning make sure to think about spaces your pet knows well. Oftentimes, pets thrive when they’re at familiar places. They’re more likely to relax and be present with us instead of trying to run around.
Even if you do bring your fur baby to your portraits, they’re not going to be in every single image, so I recommend bringing someone to help between photos! You can bring a friend, a grandparent, or another family member. If you don’t have anyone like that, consider a company like Forever and Fur Always. Occasionally with my mini sessions, I have an assistant who can help but she doesn’t come to regular sessions – so definitely plan to have someone come along to help!
Animals have to build trust with me just like kids do! I honestly treat fur babies like adorable toddlers – I talk slowly and let them build up their confidence in me. There’s no need to apologize if they’re excited or having fun. They’re furry family members, it’s expected!
Most outdoor locations are going to require your dogs to be leashed. Consider swapping out their normal leash for something more neutral if you’re concerned about the color in your photos. It’s going to be easier to hand them off to your assistant (see #2!) if they’re on a leash too.
Like young kids, animals like a good bribe so bring some treats along. This is something else your assistant can help with. Most dogs will sit if we can show we have something tasty to offer when they’re done. Seriously, I’m not above bribing an animal or kids for family photos!
Bringing your furry family member to your session is SO much fun. I want my clients to feel comfortable including all of their family in our session – so I hope these tips help you realize it’s much easier than you think! Ready to plan your family’s portraits? Let’s talk!
